Another Question About Money
This question came to mind after Angel911's post below, "Men and Money" :
There's an old saying that if you took all the money in a society and divided it equally among every member, within 10 years all the people who originally had all the money would again have it and those that had none would again have none. Do you think this would prove true? Why or why not?

I don't know, let's try it and find out. I can tell you one thing for sure though... the people without money right now would be alot happier for at least 10 years.... certainly alot happier than the ones who have all the money right now and who'll have to wait 10 years to MAYBE get all their money back. But be honest, would it really break anybody's heart if guys like Bill Gates had to do without a few hundred billion dollars?

Lol Captain! Not sure what Gates is worth on paper these days. I know at the peak of the tech boom, he was worth $90 billion. So, to be conservative, let's say he is worth $50 billion. Assuming a modest 5% return on that figure, it means he would earn $2.5 billion a year in interest. Rounding liberally, that means he would earn about $50 million a week in interest or about $7 million a day!
As regards those unhappy people who had a lot and who now have only an equal share after a redistribution of the wealth, it reminds me--albeit on a much smaller scale, and nothing so radical-- of the various European countries who gave up their national currency and adopted the Euro. It seems to me countries like Germany, whose currency was among the strongest in Western Europe, could only loose. The Deutsch Mark would be diluted. By contrast, the Portuguese Escuado could only gain, since it was one of the weakest currencies. Yet the Germans supported the move. I can only conclude that they thought in the long run, with an expanded market, it would redound to their favor. With their participation, however, they were able to insist that the European Central Bank be located in Germany and I suspect that every country does not have an equal influence in the governance of the Euro as a currency.
When I left Europe in 2001, you could buy a Euro for $0.80. Now, thanks to the Bush Administration's paean to American corporations, his fiscal and monetary policies have driven the dollar into a nose dive against all major world currencies. It now costs about $1.30 to buy one Euro. Bush delivered to his corporate buddies. American goods are now cheaper in foreign markets, but Americans are getting shafted with rising prices for European and other foreign commodities, and taking a vacation in Western Europe is costing American tourists over 50% more than they would have paid with the strong dollar of half-dozen years ago.
As regards the original question, I don't think that the distribution of wealth would return to its original state, but I do believe many of the formerly wealthy would regain their wealth and many of the formerly poor would again be reduced to poverty.

Absolutely. Some people will take the money and plan for the future; they'll have a budget, and find ways to invest. On the other hand will be people who will take the money and buy this and that; they won't budget at all and end up with nothing... they might even owe money.

People don't get rich by accident... They have bankable skills and character traits, and an understanding of how to manage money and make their money work for them.
By and large, I'd imagine that a hell of a lot of people wouldn't imagine much more to do with their share than blow it.

I agree too that people don't get rich by accident. What's more, people are not dealt the same hand in life. Someone born into a family living in abject poverty, whose parents are uneducated and poorly socialized could not even begin to compete with his contemporaries born to privilege.
However,I do not believe the fiction known as "social darwinism" promoted by the robber barons (Rockefeller, Morgan, Getty, Carnegie, et al.) to justify their ruthless exploitation and dirty dealing that led to their nominal "success." It would be one thing if they had won in a fair competition, but they employed every dirty (and illegal) trick in the book to crush their competition, then promoted this idea that they rose to the top by a sort of 'natural selection,' ' the survival of the fittest' as it were. Horseshit!
I'm all for competition in the marketplace, but FAIR competiton. The anti-trust legislation of Teddy Roosevelt's administration was designed to level the playing field. However, with the mind boggling number of corporate mergers over the past decade, it would appear that Government whores have given their blessing (in exchange for significant campaign contributions of course) to the return of monopolies. Gird your loins for the 'brave new world.'

Of course some wealthy people acquired their money in a less-ethical manner, but it's far too easy to use a broad brush and paint all rich people as evil, much the same way some viewers only see Romanian chathosts as scammers, for example. Sure, some people are bad, but most people are not. Or perhaps I am naive. I hope not.

I agree one should not paint with too broad a brush and I am by no means suggesting all rich people are evil. That would be nonsense. I would, however, make the claim that a significant majority of those who made the great fortunes in oil, banking, steel, railroads, mining, etc., did so by means that were not only dishonest, but often ruthless. Their exploitation of human labor, pushed to the limits of human endurace, was unconscionable! Rockefeller, Carnegie (and his partner, Frick--an even bigger son-of-a-bitch), Morgan and Getty might serve as examples.
And just as I do not assume the rich are evil, I do not assume the poor are meek and mild. As Getty himself quipped, "The meek might inherit the earth, but not the mineral rights." lol!

And Gates does not do illegal things. He finesses the system. He dumpster-dives the source code for DOS and puts MS- in front of it. He reverse-engineers MAC to make Windows.
When other programs are better than his he out-markets them or simply buys them. Rather than develop his own products he hires programmers to graft them into his systems.

I agree the modern era is a different world than that of the robber barons, and I think on balance Gates has been honest and for the most part ethical in his business dealings. However, I'm sure some of his competitors who have filed suit against Microsoft for certain unfair practices might not be so willing to say that Gates has always behaved ethically. And in many of these cases the Courts have agreed.
Having said that, I would never compare Gates to the robber barons. Guys like Rockefeller paid guys to pull up rail lines to derail the cars carrying the oil his competitors were shipping. And that was one of his more venial down and dirty tactics!

Here too I agree with you. Even the authors of various utopian societies (e.g. Plato's Republic) did not propose a simple equity like the case here. It's neither possible nor desirable.
An enlightened society would be one in which everyone has a contribution to make, but not each of these contributions is of equal worth. It's clear we need people to do janitorial work, but no reasonable person would suggest this work, while necessary, is of equal value as that of a skilled surgeon, for example. I think Aristotle helps here. He says, "True equality consists of treating unequal things unequally."

The true western ideal can be described as equality of opportunity, but at some point all strings must be cut and you stand or fall on your own. This is the way of western individualism. If this was a bad thing we would not be the magnet to the people of the world. If this was a bad thing capitalism would have fallen to communism.

I simply said that this hypothetical case has equity as its aim in the literal sense: The collective wealth is gathered and redistributed. I never endorsed this as a desirable end.

There will always be those who will behave in a corrupt way if they are not checked. And frankly, there is no country that is a completely free-market system of laissez-faire Capitalism. Many things---like public transportation---must be subsidized. And there is an enormous amount of corporate welfare which collectively dwarfs the "welfare" for social programs that staunch conservatives like to condemn---especially the Christian Right, who apparently have forgotten the Christian dispensation of caring for the needy.

I've seen stories about people that made millions fast (Mike Tyson, Mc Hammer, lottery winners, etc) and then you hear about how they broke or filling for bankruptcy. For some folks and money their motto should be "easy come...easy go".

Indeed. Do you remember the US Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Leon Spinks? His reign as champion was short lived, but I believe he had earned $7 million in prize money. He made a conspicuous display of his new-found wealth. I seem to recall 4 Mercedes, etc, etc. To the point, he was broke within 18 months.

There are a few things besides spending habits that determine who stays rich and who stays poor. One of the biggest is tax rates, rich people and business owners have infinitely more tax write-offs than wage earners and only pay pennies on the dollar compared to their wage earner counterparts. Those with less money are also charged more for things such as, insurance, loans, and medical than rich people are because they are labeled financial risks which makes their cost of living considerably higher when compared dollar for dollar. Then you have to consider how much rich people are also given things for free... shoes, suits, gowns, expensive jewelry, cars, exercise equipment, free meals & drinks, hotel accommodations, trips etc. by companies wanting to associate their products with rich and famous people for advertisement. It adds up quickly and saves rich people thousands of dollars that average working people have to purchase themselves at full price. So even with good budgeting skills and being a smart shopper, average joe wage earner is still playing against a stacked deck and his cost of living is going to be higher then his rich counterpart.

Well said Captain. It has been said more than once that a rich man's chauffer might be paying more in taxes than his rich employer. I remember reading in the Wall Street Journal about the widow of Dodge, the automaker. He willed his wife $100 million. As she was up in years her financial advisor suggested she put all of it in a certain class of tax-free Federal bonds that yielded 5%. Thus she was getting $5 million per year in interest and not paying a penny in taxes. Not that she should have to. The same terms are granted to any purchaser. It just seems unfair that she should pay $0 on her income and every working stiff that works for her, from her driver, gardner, cook, et al., has to pay thousands of dollars in taxes.

Moving to a foreign country. I'm from the US, but I lived and worked in France for two years. Before it became a reality I never thought of it as a big deal, but a new job, a new country, a new language, a new apartment, new sytem of weights and measures, a new medical system---well, it was rather scary at first. However, before long I settled in and now count these two years in Paris among the best in my life! Vive la France!

I have stepped in a couple times when someone has been attacked and chased the attacker away, or made them stop, at least. I chased a shoplifter several times, even though they are larger than me. I tackled one and held him until police arrived, then they let me cuff and put him in the car and arrest him myself. When we were young, me and my friends got in argument with another group. One pulled a knife and I told him I would take it from him and shove it up his ass sideways....he left....quickly. Once a ladies car almost fell off a cliff...I got inside it while it's on the edge...and brought it back on the road (for that I was most scared...it could have gone over and there's nothing i can do but take the ride down!)

4 - get married

6 - have kids
7 - get girlfriend
In fact, a guy in supposed to have girlfriends when he is married or his friends laugh at him. The wife is only there to keep house and be mom/cook. He has fun with his friends and girlfriends while wife sits at home and waits.
Maybe your boyfriend has this list, as well.

Alias, While there are many men and women in America that continue to subscribe to the old tradition, American thinking as a whole has changed quite a bit. Many women have careers now and are in the professions that had long been exclusively male. I recently read a statistic that now the percentage of women attending law school has exceeded that of men---not by much (I think it was 51-52%), but in light of the fact that a half century ago there were very few women attorneys or judges, it is remarkable. The number of women in medicine and the sciences is also significant.
There is still not wage equality in all lines of work, but women are now a significant presence in the board rooms of corporations, politics and higher education. In fact, Harvard University--America's oldest university--just appointed its first female president since its founding in 1636. It only took 371 years (lol!), but the fact that it happened when even 20-30 years ago no one could have imagined it would, is remarkable.

I too am a defender of equal rights. But I also recognize that there is nothing wrong with a woman staying at home to raise the children. Indeed it is honorable, but a woman should do this as a matter of free choice and not because her husbnd wants her to stay at home.

In fact, I admire anyone who learns a second (or third or fourth...) language. Americans are famously bad at speaking foreign languages. In fact, most people from anglophone countries are less accomplished at foreign languages than their European counterparts. Since English has become the global lingua franca, people don't place a high premium on learning a second language.

Well in Romania in most of the families both parents work and they work long hours. Kids go to school, stay out and have fun with friends - or in the house in front of the computer - and nobody has any problems with it.
And guess what? For me - and for many women like me - staying at home and rasing the kids, depending on a man's money and will to give me some when I need is not as rewarding as it seems to be for you or your mom. Why should I wait for a man to give me money when I need tampons, a cake, a bikini or god knows what else? Why would I be only the wife who sits at home, takes care of the kids, cleans, cooks and awaits her husband to come from work or hookers? There is absolutely nothing rewarding about that! And believe me, I tried it - without the kids part - and I never was happy! The only moments when I was happy and felt rewarded for my work and felt good was when I was running a business and working on CC and going to Uni too. The more things I can do at once, the better I feel.
And, as I said, there r many women like me, that can't stand to be financially supported by their husbands or bf's. And do you know why? Because the males usually become assholes in situations like these. They think they deserve everything for the simple reason that they work and bring the money in the house. Is that the wqay you think it works? The man gives money dollar by dollar as requested? No. The family agrees on a budget for the month. They pay all the big bills rent, gas, phone, etc. They put some into savings/investment. Then normal expenses like food, petrol, tampons, etc. Then each gets a certain amount of pocket money for their hobbies or eating out or extra clothes. How else do you suggest that it is done?

this is the way i am,, i get up every morning I shower, shaved, get dress, eat a grola bar and drive into the mountains, climb a tower, overlook trees and waters,, and then after 4 hours, drive in the park looking for people who are violating park rules (which the best one is and I overlook that one is people having sex,, heck i say let them enjoy the outside air,,,,if they can take the cold and ice around its worth not telling on them...just dont tell my boss) and then i climb back up the tower and look around again (its getting very bored) so during this I sometimes come to this community chat room and sit on my ass (and by the way which is getting bigger) and watch this screen and words flash before my eyes,, sometimes its words of encourage, laughter,, sadness, happy, fun, bad, and sometimes boring. My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects.
They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its
headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into
their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches.The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird must be an informant. I observe
him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now...
