in memoriam
Two days ago there was a boating accident on the Delaware river which separates New Jersey from Pennsylvania in the USA. It occurred on a tourist boat which is actually an open air bus which converts to a boat when it gets to the river in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The vehilce allows you to see the city from both land and from the water. I believe that they have similar vehicles in other cities in the USA as well.
Two people died as a result of the accident, both of whom were visitors from Hungary. One victim was a 20 year old man, the other was a 16 year old girl whose body they found today. They were visiting with a group of Hungarians that I believe were here for some type of English language program.
Tragedies happen all over the world each day. We hear about them. We feel bad. And then we move on. But because of sites and the friends I have made, I feel closer to things that happen in other countries. And now, something has happened near where I am to visitors from Europe.
I don't have any friends from Hungary, but this international connection that I feel has made this incident upset me a great deal. so why should I, a non-smoker, have to be subjected to your 2nd hand smoke. It IS harmful, proven to be so. And it smells bad, and makes breathing difficult. And it's not "outside" that is mainly the issue, it is in public buildings are around the perimeter (in ohio, 30 feet from a building, which I think is a bit excessive). One restaurant here, before the ban, the smoke was so bad that just walking in to the restaurant, and immediately exiting, my clothes reeked of the smoke. Smoking is offensive, especially to those who don't like the smell, or who find breathing difficult because of it. It's not just the carcinogenic aspects of it.

actually, i don't really believe it's a health issue - there has never been a reliable, peer reviewed study that proves that secondhand smoke is a health hazard. that is all media hype and a witch hunt. it's not concentrated enough and you can't breathe enough of it during the day. it's just a nuisance. i hate coming home from the club and having my clothes reek of smoke and i hate having to pay 50 euro every 3 months to get my leather jacket cleaned coz it absorbs all the smoke smells from the pub....

We are not talking about indoor places which I also agree....it stinks. The new bans are to prohibit smoking outdoors as well. In NYC I know someone that was stopped by an officer and he was smoking in his car and when his window went down to speak to the officer some smoke came out the window and he was fined $185 because the smoke was outdoors....this is stupid!! Outdoors if someone is rude and lights up by someone then others always have the right to move and not be exposed. This is so petty and a stupid law. If people want to argue whether or not you should be allowed to smoke in public that's one thing. We could have a debate about personal freedom. But JUST FOR RECORD since there are those who are also saying secondhand smoke isn't bad for you -- or it isn't really bad for anyone else who is around you -- here are some SCIENTIFIC FACTS people should know...
1) Between 70% and 90% of non-smokers in America are exposed to secondhand smoke. It is estimated only 15% of cigarette smoke gets inhaled by the actual smoker. The remaining 85% lingers in the air for others to breathe.
2) If a person spends more than two hours in a room where someone is smoking, the non-smoker inhales the equivalent of four cigarettes.
3) Secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading cause of preventable early death. For every 8 smokers who die from smoking, 1 innocent bystander dies from secondhand smoke.
4) Secondhand smoke contains over 4000 chemicals including 40 cancer causing agents and 200 known poisons. It's classified as a Class A carcinogen (a substance known to cause cancer). It contains twice as much tar and nicotine per unit volume than the smoke directly inhaled from a cigarette. It also contains 3 times more cancer-causing benzpyrene, 5 times more carbon monoxide, and 50 times more ammonia.
5) Non-smoking women who live with a smoker have a 91% greater risk of heart disease and twice the risk of dying from lung cancer. Never-smoking spouses exposed to secondhand smoke have a 20% higher death rate for lung cancer and heart disease.
6) Repeated exposure to secondhand smoke causes thickening of the walls of the carotid arteries -- and thus accelerates atherosclerosis -- and damages the lining of the arteries.

the world cup isn't designed to determine the best football. if it were, it wouldn't be a single elimination tournament determined by deliberately controversial/horrible officiating, a deliberately controversial/gimmicky newly introduced ball, and the exclusion of better teams from europe and south america for the inclusion lesser teams from elsewhere. and yes, it would be great if they would actually penalize all the diving and injury acting.

When i watched england vs germany , i didnt think they were all that good , England gifted them all their goals through bad defending and chasing the game and playing very poorly as a team , that said it should have been 2-2 at one stage and maybe would have been a different outcome . I have to take my hat off to the germans , they are consistently good , tournament after tournament , their players on paper are often not as good as the teams they play but they do play as a team and know how to play as a team and they are single minded and do the job expected of them . I am glad Argentina are out , personal reasons but pls god dont let Germany beat Spain and win the world cup , i would like to see a team that has never won the world cup win it , Spain preferably or the dutch ....... pls god hear my prayer :)

Sure, Argentina was good, but its wasnt hard for them cuz untill this match with Germany, they didnt have a serious test:) They played with Nigeria, Greece, Korea and Mexico, those are not top teams, well except maybe Mexico, they are good, but still not the same level as Argentina or Germany. Im not saying that Argentina played bad, its just Germany plays better:)
